Below are the different types of perms:
- Alkaline perms - These are best for the hair, which has not yet undergone any kind of treatment before such as hair coloring, gloss, relax, etc. This can help to create firm and strong curls. It has a ph level of over 7.5 that is why this kind of perm provides a firm and strong curl results on natural hair.
- Acid perms - Will give a gentle acidic effect that reduces the chance of hair damage, which is suited for fragile, fine or sensitive types of hair.

- Spiral perms - Are attained by using long perm rods instead of rollers, which results to romantic spiral curls. This type of style helps to add volume to the hair and looks very good on long hair.
- Pin curl perms - These are for a temporary styling of hair that creates soft, natural curl and waves. This suits to women who do not have much time to go to salons to have their hair fixed. Pin curls are tiny sections of hair curled around the finger and secured with a bobby pin.
- Stack perms - This is best for haircuts such as the one-length style. By leaving the hair on top flat, curlers of different sizes are used to add volume, texture and bouncy effect to the middle and bottom sections of the hair. It comes very natural when stack perms are done very well.
- Body perms/waves - These are loose perms that are created by using large curlers, which give a smooth and natural wave to a very straight hair. However, if the hair has a slight wave, the normal curl is emphasized by concentrating on the bottom layers of the hair. The effects of this type of perm are depending on the natural consistency and condition of the hair.
- Root perms are created by wrapping the hair 2-4 inches nearest to the scalp. This perm lifts the roots that will thicken the hair and make it stand away from the scalp. The technique works best on a short hair.
- Spot perms - These are attained by leaving the hair wrapped around with a roller or permanent rod for an allocated period before applying the chemicals to relax the hair. This perm creates movement and volume on the selected area of the hair.
- Volumizing Perms - These are permanent waves that are suitable for different kinds of hair lengths, but fade out more quickly than traditional perms, which last around 6 months. This type of perm adds more volume, texture to dull and lifeless hair and turns out to glamorous and bouncy effect.
